How the membrane nitrogen generator works

AGS Engineering produces air separation plants of various configurations based on hollow fiber membrane modules. To separate nitrogen, the purified and dried compressed air is supplied with a membrane gas separation unit. The size of oxygen molecules is smaller than that of nitrogen, as a result of which oxygen passes through the membrane fibers faster than nitrogen molecules. This leads to the enrichment of nitrogen to the required purity inside the hollow fibers, while the air stream enriched with oxygen (permeate) is discharged outside the membrane module. The purity of production nitrogen can be controlled by setting the operating conditions - the purity of nitrogen increases with decreasing nitrogen flow rate and vice versa. Regulation is carried out using the flow / purity control valve installed after the flow meter and nitrogen analyzer at the outlet of the membrane module, which allows final control of both the flow and nitrogen purity. The use of membrane air separation technology is energy efficient in industrial enterprises where there is a need for nitrogen of low concentration of 93% -99%.

Design and principle of operation of the membrane module
The membrane consists of a “bundle” of selectively permeable hollow fibers. The separation of nitrogen from atmospheric air occurs on the principle of selective penetration through the membrane wall. The fibers are stacked in bunches and filled at the ends with epoxy resin so that the ends of the fibers remain open, then the ends are processed and the resulting membrane is mounted in the membrane module housing.
It is very important that the air entering the membrane module is clean and dry. If this is not the case, the fibers will clog quickly, resulting in a loss of membrane station performance. To extend the life of the membrane modules, it is necessary to install a highly efficient air conditioning system that will remove droplet moisture, oil vapor and particulate matter.

Spiral compressor compresses atmospheric air and delivers into membrane modules. For membrane nitrogen generators, compressors with operating pressures up to 25 bar can be used.
Compressed Air Desiccant Is necessary to remove moisture from compressed air. In a nitrogen station, depending on the requirements for the quality of production nitrogen, either a refrigeration desiccant with a dew point of +3 ° C or an adsorption one with a dew point of up to -70 ° C can be used.
Filtration System Is necessary to remove residual moisture, oil and particulate matter after the compressor.
Compressed Air Heater when heated compressed air is supplied, the gas permeability of the membrane fibers increases, that is, the amount of produced nitrogen production increases.
